Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic era, who lived from 1809 to 1847. He wrote a collection of forty eight piano pieces called "Songs Without Words" or "Lieder Ohne Worte" of which this piece is no. 4, op. 19. The lyrical, melodious nature of these pieces reflects the description of songs without words. Here is another Song Without Words.
After a tender and expressive introduction, a hymn like chordal section presents warm harmonies underlying a nostalgic melody. The Chorale like style of this section demonstrates the fact that Mendelssohn was influenced and inspired by J.S. Bach of the Baroque era, who wrote a lot of Chorales.
I recorded this video in November 2017.
You can listen to me playing a Bach piece here. You can also listen to more pieces from the Romantic era, such as Schumann Romance No.2, Chopin Nocturne in F minor, Schumann Fantasy Dance. or another Song Without Words - Mendelssohn Song Without Words, Op.19, No.2
