As a piano teacher with many years of experience teaching and playing, I have discovered what works and what doesn't work when it comes to learning how to play fast on the piano. So many piano players yearn for that seemingly effortless effect of the fingers gliding over the keyboard with the utmost grace and agility, but have no idea how to get there. This book outlines ways in which to develop your technique in order to be able to play fast on the piano.

All too often I see piano learners fall into the same traps, including focusing too much on trying to build strength in their fingers. While finger strength is important, excessive focus on this is detrimental to other important aspects of technique, such as dexterity, flexibility and control. Technique is about learning how to use your muscles (and which ones not to use), rather than trying to build up all your muscles. In this book I share with you a few of the principles you need to learn in order to achieve that nimble, agile, controlled, fast playing that you’re after; instead of the heavy, out of control playing that so often results from learning bad technique and focusing too much on strength building.

You can see and hear me demonstrate fast playing on the piano here in my video of Beethoven Rondo in E,  in my video of Schubert Impromptu No. 3, or in my video of Schumann Fantasy Dance. Alternatively, use the navigation menu to find many more videos of my piano playing, including more fast playing.
Included in this package - sheet music PDF downloads of three studies designed to train the correct movement patterns on the piano in order to develop several different aspects of your technique. This in turn will enable faster learning of new pieces of music, and faster, more controlled playing on the piano. The studies included are:
  1. Broken chord study - a simple piece of music around grade 3 level, based on broken chord accompaniment in one hand and melody in the other hand, to develop coordination between the hands and familiarity with commonly used broken chord patterns. This is in a minor key, and is two pages.
  2. Agility study - a slightly harder piece, (intermediate to advanced) designed especially for developing agility and controlled, neat, fast playing on the piano using tricks I have learned from many years of teaching and playing piano. This sheet music PDF is four pages long.
  3. Alberti bass study - a piece around grade 3 to 4 level - another good one for developing coordination between the hands, control, and familiarity with some different commonly used broken chord patterns. Three pages.
If you are an intermediate to advanced player, the two easier studies will allow you to practise your sight reading, and pick up the notes quickly and easily, enabling you to focus more on your technique and coordination. If you are slightly below intermediate level, these studies will be a useful challenge. I generally recommend this package to piano learners of grades 4 to 8 level and above.
