Nocturne in F minor, opus 55, number 1 was written in 1843 by Polish composer and pianist Frederic Chopin. Chopin was a composer of the Romantic era who wrote twenty one Nocturnes between 1827 and 1846. A Nocturne is a composition designed to portray a night time scene or atmosphere. Nocturnes tend to be dreamy, melancholy, gentle and melodic in character. Irish composer John Field (1782 - 1837) was thought to have originally created the concept of Nocturnes as piano solo pieces. Chopin went on to develop the idea further, and his Nocturnes gained recognition for being some of the greatest and most popular piano pieces written. Chopin's other piano works include Waltzes, Mazurkas, Ballades, Polonaises and Preludes.
