Author: Ruth Pheasant, piano teacher.
I have written lots of articles and tutorials about learning to play the piano including how to read music, how and why to work on technique, how to improvise, how to memorise, how to practise and more. A lot of the subjects of my articles have been inspired by commonly asked questions from my pupils over the years. I have drawn upon my teaching experience to share some of the most successful methods and answers to these questions. What works for one person doesn't always work for another person - this is something I have learned from years of teaching, and I have had to be quick to adapt my teaching methods accordingly. However there are many common problems and questions that come up time and time again, and there are many methods of learning that work consistently well for many people. I have outlined many of these methods and principles of learning, as well as providing information about the music I have recorded on my videos pages; so whether you want to learn how to play piano, improve your piano playing, or just develop a greater understanding of music in general, there is something here for you.
I have organised my articles into categories. Just click on a picture above to choose a category, and then you will find more pictures that link to the articles within that category. Alternatively you could do a site search.
