Update: I re-recorded this video in May 2020 using an iPhone and external microphone for better sound quality. The original video (which is underneath) was recorded using an iPad and the on-board microphone.
Prelude XXI was composed by J S Bach and is from his series of forty eight preludes and fugues written during the Baroque period. I have also recorded the Fugue which goes with this piece. The modern piano (pianoforte) as we know it had not been invented yet in the Baroque era, instead, pieces like this were played on harpsichords or clavichords. This piece is written in the style of a toccata, which was a kind of composition designed to show off the performer's technique. It is also written in a very improvisatory style, including some freedom of form and tempo, with ad lib sounding ornamentation.
I have recorded another Prelude from Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues - No. 15 - which you can listen to here. You may also like Bach's Fantasia in C minor.
