In my other articles about technique I have mentioned the importance of good technique and why it needs to be worked on.
Technique isn't just something that very advanced students and professionals work on. To make your life easier in the long run, and the whole learning process run as smoothly as possible, it is important to establish good habits with technique from the very start. If good technique is not learned from the start you are likely to get in to bad habits which are so deeply ingrained that they become very difficult to correct. This can seriously hinder your progress, and you may find yourself hitting a wall where you just can't seem to get past a particular difficulty. Taking short cuts in the beginning may make it seem like you're making quick progress at first, but all the gaps in your learning start to become evident later on when you find your progress plateaus and you can't seem to get beyond a certain point. It can be frustrating to find that you need to go back to basics, but this is what can happen if you try and run before you can walk.
The early stages of learning piano are crucial for establishing deeply ingrained good habits, so if you are an adult learner just beginning, or your child is starting to learn, it is a good idea to seek the guidance of a qualified instructor.
A qualified instructor can point out adjustments that need to be made to your hand position that you may not be aware of. He or she can show you which fingers to use when, and the most appropriate ways of moving up and down the keyboard. Rhythm is another aspect of learning piano that needs guidance, as it is very common for learners to not realise when they are doing it wrong. Similar things can be said for reading notation.
Music is an art form and a means of expression, but to sound good and make sense it needs to be learned with a certain amount of discipline. Don't let your creativity be held back by a lack of technique.
