In Church is a short piano piece written by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, a Russian composer of the Romantic era. This piece is number 24 from a collection called Album for the Young, op. 39, which was first published in 1878.
In Church is a slow and sombre piece, as suggested by the "largo" performance direction (largo means slow) and the minor tonality (it is in E minor), as well as the homophonic texture - the simplicity of this texture creates clarity. Pedal can enhance the sound by giving resonance, which can imitate the echoing effect found within churches. At the same time, the clarity of the texture prevents the pedal from making the sound too muddy and noisy. You can read more about pedal technique here.
