This piece is no. 49 from a collection of 100 studies opus 139, by Carl Czerny. Czerny was an Austrian composer and pianist of Czech origins, during the Romantic period. He wrote a very large number of studies specifically for developing technique, and this piece is one of them. His studies were well designed for training various different aspects of technique, hand positions and movements.
This particular study is very good for legato technique, sustained overlapping parts in the left hand accompaniment, broken chord patterns, and melodic shaping. It is also good practise for brief ornamentation, due to the mordents and turn near the end.
