Elegie is a piano piece composed by French pianist Cecile Chaminade who lived from 1857 to 1944. Cecile Chaminade was unusual for her time - a female composer achieving success and recognition in a very male dominated area. Gender prejudice may well have had an effect on how a lot of her work was received, but times have changed.
Elegie is from a set of pieces called "Album des Enfants", and was composed in 1907. Despite being written during the twentieth century era of Western art music, it features a lot of devices influenced by Romantic styles of music, such as lyrical melodies singing out above rich harmonies.
An Elegie (or elegy in English) is a mournful song or poem, and this gently melancholic piece with song-like melodies fits the title.
This is a good example of a grade 6 standard piece, and it was in the 2011/2012 ABRSM syllabus for grade 6 piano.
Here is another grade 6 piece: Heller Prelude in C Sharp Minor.
If you liked this you may also enjoy my videos of Brahms Intermezzo, Mendelssohn Venetian Gondola Song in F sharp minor, or Mozart Sonata in C, K545, Allegro.
