You can also listen to an audio recording of me playing Moonlight Sonata, first movement, recorded in 2014:
This piano piece, Adagio Sostenuto, is the first movement of the piano sonata in C sharp minor No. 14, opus 27 No.2, composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven in 1801. This sonata consists of three movements of which the first is most well known. This piece is commonly known as the "Moonlight" sonata, although this is not a name given to the piece by Beethoven himself, it is a nickname which was thought of later in reference to the beautiful, tranquil style of the first movement. However, the initial impression of tranquility is only scratching the surface of this music, and it belies the pathos and tragedy which is really at the heart of this piece - contained, restrained and subtle perhaps, but there nonetheless. This is not a melodramatic depiction of emotion, instead it is a subtle, quiet and understated communication of heartache and suffering, which is perhaps why it has been misinterpreted as an atmospheric, calm image of "moonlight". Listen to the subtleties, and perhaps you will see why the title "Moonlight" really doesn't do it justice.
